Summary

A subdialect of Palanga dwellers

Juozas Pabrėža

The paper deals with linguistic peculiarities, which show that the sub-dialect of Palanga area dwellers is a typical representative of the western dialect of north Žemaičiai people. Instead of standard language diphthongs uo and ie and nasal vowels ą and ę they use sounds Ou and Ëi typical only of north Žemaičiai dialect; short vowels u, i are often pronounced wider, the diphthongs ai, ei are monophthongised (pronounced as one vowel), the reduction of the endings is very well pronounced, the alternation of and t, d is eliminated and only sounds t and d are pronounced in all forms of declension, there is a rule of general stress shift as well.
