Juozas Pabrėža
Phonetic features (sounds and prosody) discussed in the present paper show that the Žarėnai speech is a typical representative of the Northern Samogitian (Šiaurės Žemaičių) Telšiškiai sub-dialect: it has retained ou, ei sounds typical of Northern Samogitian dounininkai, the present law of Samogitian affricative sounds, a more ancient pronunciation of nasal vowels ą, ę, ų, į with n, an exceptional assimilation of vowels, typical of Telšiškiai sub-dialect, Samogitian qualities of other sounds; the most intensive universal stress retraction, and expressed accents.
